Javea Information

Javea, or Xabia in the local Valenciano dialect, is a coastal town in the province of Alicante.

Based in the autonomous region of Comunidad Valenciana in Spain by the Mediterranean sea the town is popular with tourists and expats alike. Over two thirds of the yearly visitors and inhabitants are in fact of foreign origins.

The Montgo Massif mountain is one of the stand-out features of the whole region and one of the main reasons the climate is so desirable in the town. It shelters the town from much of the winter weather and with the help of the southerly rocky headland it protects the residents from colder fronts. This desirable climate has been sought after for thousands of years and remains of inhabitants have been dated back to the Stone and Bronze age. Other historical inhabitants include the Romans, Moors, Greeks and many more.

Growth Of Javea

In more modern times Javea has seen a great increase in the expat community. This has allowed the town to grow and thrive in the tourist industry. With silky sand and stone based beaches scattered along the whole coastline, the hotels and holiday villas are regularly full during the Summer months.

Urban Areas Of Javea

Javea is a town split into 3 distinctive urbanised areas. Beyond this large housing areas exist but in the core of the town these 3 regions are recognised as the primary urban zones.

The Old Town (Pueblo)

The first of these areas is the old town of Javea. A historical centre that has not forgotten it’s past, traditions and culture. The old town is still an incredible time-tunnel that allows a view of what the Medieval town must have been like. Small streets and houses built close together for warmth and protection are common in this area.

Common properties for sale in Javea in this area are townhouses and apartments. Older villas are available on the outskirts of the old town but these are available much more rarely as they have belonged to families from Javea for many years. Old Spanish apartments and townhouses tend to be much larger than the new-build equivalents but leave something to be desired in the modern building techniques and technology. This is due to most being built many years ago.

If you are looking to live an authentic Spanish life amongst in the heart of the town then living in the old town could be the ideal option.

The Port Of Javea

The second area of the town to develop was the port area. Originally based around the fishing port and favourable port conditions to shelter ships this grew to be a modern metropolitan area popular with foreign and local residents. This area is a compromise between the historical and modern lifestyles of the town. The old “Fisherman’s“ church is a popular destination for tourists. A striker architectural feat that even has the ceiling designed to look like the bottom of a boat. Just down from the church though you will find modern restaurants and bars that sit on the waterfront offering an unparalleled view of the town and coastline.

When looking for properties in the port area of Javea you will find a selection of apartments and townhouses on the outskirts of the area. As previously mentioned the port area marries the old with the new perfectly and this is evident in the types of properties. New build properties adorn the coastline and mountain side while within the more urban area the classic Spanish apartments are spacious, very bright and cool during the summer months.

The Arenal (Beach Area)

The final major area of the town is the Arenal or beach area. This is the most popular for tourists as the beach is adorned by bars and restaurants. The ideal holiday location. Just a short walk from the Arenal are a variety of other coves and beaches that may not offer the comfort of the sand based beach but these ‘calas’ are picturesque and offer crystal clear waters for swimming.

The properties for sale around the more urbanised Arenal area are mostly apartments. A selection of townhouses and duplex apartments have been newly built and make great acquisitions for holiday rentals. You do not have to travel far to find the villas that the town is so famous for. Large homes with pools, gardens and either traditional Spanish or modern Mediterranean styles of architecture.

Nearest Airports

When travelling from abroad to reach Javea you will be looking to fly to Valencia or Alicante airports. These are the closest and both lie just over an hour North and South respectively along the coast. These airports are busy with European flights but those travelling from further away may need to arrive via Madrid or larger airports.

Bus routes are available up and down the coast to the airports. These are run by ALSA and more recently by Beniconnect, the latter being a more specialised airport service than the general service that runs throughout towns too.
